How to build

Modals of advice are may, could, can, and mustn’t. Like all other modals, may, could, can, and mustn’t are used with other verbs.

• Students can travel free with their passport.

• You mustn’t drink alkohol in the subway station.

May is considered the most formal modal verb used to ask for permission. Could is less formal than may. Can is the least formal.

• May I have another slice of bread?

• Could I have some more orange juice?

• Can you pass the ball.
